About Our Group

We are a team of investigators and practitioners connected through work and education with the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of North Texas, in Denton, Texas. Our team also actively partners with outside researchers who have similar location research and application priorities.

We share a common interest in advancing thought and application through research, teaching, and mentorship in the emerging field of location intelligence (or "LI").

What is Location Intelligence?  At its heart, LI is the combined application of geographic thinking, visualization, and analytics to empower and enable organizations of all kinds to incorporate a consideration of place and space in making better decisions.

Application targeted to decision support is thus a defining focus for LI. This decision support core interest differentiates LI from other, closely-related fields in geography, mathematics, business, and the social sciences.
Location Intelligence is a Synthesizing Field. LI should also be recognized as bringing together insights developed in specialized research areas like business geography and health & medical geography, with the aim of conveying the benefits of this research to a broad, applied community.

In total, LI is best conceived as an evidence-based, results-driven application framework that bridges diverse areas of geographical investigation and education to support the decision making process in organizations of all kinds.

Who uses Location Intelligence?  Institutions benefiting from the LI approach range from:
  • For-profit businesses (e.g. Costco, ExxonMobil, Toyota), through
  • Non-profit organizations (e.g. American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, National Audubon Society), to
  • Government departments and agencies (e.g. FEMA, EPA, TxDOT).
Organizations like these use location intelligence at multiple spatial scales, from the global to the local.

A Primary Contribution: Location Intelligence Research
One of the primary avenues for UNT-LIRG to develop our location intelligence research is through cross-cutting research that addresses key problems and questions facing practitioners and decision makers.
